Experiences

My five year old son and I stayed at Kamira for four months. Our relationship was quite damaged through my inattention and irritability while I was using.  As a result he became very aggressive towards me, hitting and throwing multiple tantrums every day. The Child and Family Team at Kamira helped me realise that he was simply seeking connection with me and that only love could improve the situation.

They taught us attachment games to play together, and devised soothing activities to help us calm down. They gave me specific and workable strategies to use in difficult situations, many times stepping in to assist when it got too much for me. He went from hitting me ten times a day to maybe once every couple of days while we were there, and our relationship just kept improving once we left, to the point where he now trusts me and listens to me and has also stopped throwing tantrums.

The counsellors there have given me the skills and the confidence I needed to mother him with the love and patience that he deserves, and he is back to being the wonderful, loving little boy I once knew.
Kamira changed my LIFE. Being at kamira helped me find myself and help me become who I wanted to be for me and my kids. I now know how to be okay with me and steps I can take to self soothe and to sit with my feelings.

Going to Kamira was the best choice I had made for a very long time. Prior to becoming a resident, I had hit rock bottom, addiction had taken over my life. I had lost everything and my son was placed into care. My mental health suffered dramatically.

Whilst being in Kamira I was taught how to manage my emotions, teaching me skills on how to cope when things didn’t go my way and to be prepared when things went wrong. How to rewire my brain, learning skills to manage difficult times and trauma. How to build on family relationships and focusing in how to be a better parent.

We have an individual case worker who works around our individual needs, focusing on mental health, trauma, our recovery and our emotions that lead up to using. They teach us about boundaries and having routine and structure in our lives.

It has taught me how to be a better person and to be able to live in the community without addiction, to lead a happy content life.

The staff are great and really care about the residents and work very hard to help them achieve their goals. After finishing the program we still have the support of Kamira and are welcome to come back for groups and support upon leaving, which is a great way to help settle back into the community at our own pace.

I can't thank them enough for saving my life.

Thank you Kamira.
